Friendship Star by the lovely Deb Strain is the Block 12 for this week. I first met Deb Strain at Quilt Market when my first line of Toweling, Picnic Point, was being launched. She was my booth neighbour and was very friendly, supportive and kind. She welcomed me to the Moda family and it was lovely to get to know her better. So Friendship Star is a perfect name for this block by Deb.
You can see what I have done with the toweling stripes in both these block.
For the 4 ½" I have made it exactly as the instructions say and placed the toweling in the centre of the square.
For the large block I have cut and assembled things a little differently.
I wanted the stripes to be continuous and all running in the same direction on the block.
So my cutting instructions are as follows:
A - (4) 3 ½" x 3 ½"
B - (1) 3 ½" x 9 ½"
C - (2) 3 ½" x 3 ½"
C - (1) 3 ⅞" x 3 ⅞"
D - (1) 3 ⅞" x 3 ⅞"
You can see there are two different C pieces here. The 3 ½" ones will be at each end of the B rectangle. The other two are paired with the D blocks to make the half square triangles.
To create the points on the 3 ½" x 9 ½" rectangle place a 3 ½" square at each end and sew across the diagonal. I am a new convert to Diagonal Seam Tape, and it is perfect for this block. It saves you drawing the diagonal on the square. Anything that saves a step is a good thing, IMHO!
Make sure your diagonals are parallel to each other.
When you sew the 3 ⅞" squares together, pin and check which diagonal to sew. You want all the stripes running in the same direction, so it's always worth checking. You can see how I have folded the leaf print background on the toweling so I know which diagonal to sew.
Once you have made all the pieces it is easy to see how to put it together, and it is a quick block to sew. I look forward to seeing all your different versions.
Happy Sewing
Jenelle
